Diversionary activities and holiday excursions for the Strathmartine Ward

The funding would enable us to be creative, flexible and responsive to the needs, interests and issues expressed by local young people and allows us as a Youth Work Team to deliver a diverse range of learning opportunities through different workshops and activities (during term-time, weekends and holiday periods). The number of young people accessing provision in the above areas is increasing each week. More and more young people are highlighting their interest in becoming young volunteers as well as making the choice to access a wide range of youth services and groups in all areas. Young people are keen to participate and develop their life skills, along with their self-confidence, self-esteem, communication and listening skills, as well as becoming a team player and achieving an accredited award such as the Saltire Volunteering Award, Hi-5 Award, or Dynamic Youth Award. This funding would enable the West CLD Youth Work Team in conjunction with other partners, such as Education, Social Work, Leisure &Culture, The Corner and voluntary organisations/independent artists/arts workers to offer young people learning opportunities relevant to their own individual or group needs and enables us to tackle some of the issues currently facing local young people. We can respond to issues such as Mental health and wellbeing/physical health, sexual health and relationships, drug and alcohol awareness, arts, drama, outdoor activities and volunteering/accreditation, as well as enabling and encouraging young people to have more of a say in their local communities. To support this bid to CRF, we have evidence gathered from last year showing that a high number of young people accessed youth work provision and holiday activities across the Strathmartine Ward. More and more young people are accessing evening provision across Ardler, St. Mary’s and Kirkton areas and there is a clear and apparent need for food provisions to be included within our diversionary programmes and our holiday activity programmes. The Project will complement the work that the Youth Team already provide within the local area by offering additional learning opportunities for young people in the local area, during the school holidays at Summer, October and Christmas (inclusive of mid-term holidays and in-service days). Young people will be supported to plan, implement and deliver the activities/excursions offered throughout the holiday periods. The funding will enable us to be much more creative and diverse in the range of activities and excursions we can offer young people in these local areas. Young people are highlighting that they want to participate in more planned, all day excursions out with Dundee and participate in outdoor activities and residentials, where they have an opportunity to be away for a weekend. A successful residential took place last year, led by the Youth Team, in partnership with Ancrum Outdoor Centre. More and more young people across other areas have expressed an interest in having similar experiences this year. Evidence regarding feedback and responses from young people will be included with this bid, to show the opinions, ideas and suggestions of young people accessing youth work provision across the Strathmartine Ward.
